She left Iran in 1987 and lived in Pakistan for two years before coming to the United States. She has lived in the Washington, D.C., area since and she is now married to the co-author Reza Safarnejad. Reza was born in Iran in 1971 and has lived in various parts of Iran including Kurdistan and Tehran. He left Iran in 1985 has lived in the Washington, D.C., area since 1986.  Reza has a bachelor of science from University of Maryland.
